In Scripture, our life with Christ is compared to a race that God has called us to run. It is not a short sprint but, rather, a long-distance, life-long marathon that we run on a daily basis. For each of us, the course is a little different, as we are all individuals living our own individual lives in this world. Only at the end of our lives here on Earth do we finally cross the finish line and receive the winner's crown, entering into the eternal presence of our Lord.
Hebrews 12:1 calls us to run with endurance the race God has set before us. This is because each of us is called to run a specific race that God has called us to. I am not called to run anyone else's race, nor is anyone else called to run mine. My life is my life and that is what I am called to deal with, come what may. The twists and turns in the path I am running on are there for me specifically to navigate and overcome, all the while learning in the process. My life is tailor-made for me to come to know the Lord day-by-day as I run this race set before me.
As individuals that make up the body of Christ, we all have a different calling on our lives. We are all called by Christ in the Great Commission to go into the world and make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20), but we don't all accomplish this in the same way. Our life's circumstances are all different and the ways we serve are different, as well. It is important to know who we are in Christ and what our callings and gifts are. Only then can we truly run the race that God has called us to and be who God has called us to be.
Who has God called you to be? Who or what has He put on your heart on a daily basis? In what way have you been called to serve? What gifts has He put in you to do these things? We all have to seek God out for the answers to these questions, for the answers will be different for each one of us. As believers, we have access to the Lord 24/7 and He bids us come boldly to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16) and offers wisdom to all who need it (James 1:5). If anyone doesn't know who they are in Christ, then finding the answer to that should be a priority in their lives.
Today, let us run with endurance the race set before us. Let us run the race to win it, looking to the day we cross that finish line and enter into the winner's circle of eternal life and see Jesus face-to-face for the first time. Let us endure whatever we must endure and let us press on today to know this God who has loved us with such an amazing love that He sent His only Son to die in our place. Let us be who God created us to be and do what He created us to do in this world, worshiping Him with our whole lives (Romans 12:1). And let us seek to glorify Him with all that we say and do, for this is the chief purpose of these lives He has given us.
